Indigenous Peoples' Day in the US - A Map of Those Who Came Before Us
Did You Know...?
While many are taught and continue to think that the cultures of indigenous peoples are ancient and bygone, they actually aren't! The term 'Indigenous peoples' refers to "the notion of a place-based human ethnic culture that has not migrated from its homeland." Indigenous peoples, therefore, are alive and richly involved throughout the world today! Maps.com is proud to dedicate this page to those peoples in an effort to honor them and hope that readers like you might learn or come to appreciate something new about them!
Indigenous Peoples of North America, 1500 CE
Created to honor Indigenous Peoples Day, this illustrated map celebrates Native American Peoples, their histories and their cultures. It's a representation of Native American groups starting from the time of European contact around 1500 CE, and for a period thereafter. It is not comprehensive, and those nations shown may have grown, diminished, or changed location over time.

“We recognize the people who stood here and protected this land and protected the Earth before us...I think there’s a responsibility to everyone in the United States to understand what land you’re standing on and to learn about the history of the place that you occupy, to respect the ground that you walk on.”
