Scout's Ride of the Month
The Carolinas
You'll be intrigued by this day trip as you leisurely encircle fast-growing Charlotte. Since you'll need some sustenance for your adventure, before leaving town you should head to the Coffee Cup for some chicken 'n' waffles at this beloved soul-food diner. Once you've fueled yourself, be sure to fill up your gas tank as it's time to explore the amazing scenery in the "Metrolina" area. A highlight is the dams on the Catawba River, which have created a succession of jagged lakes and reservoirs--with terrific roads for a drive. The riches of the land offer more than meets the eye, as this is where gold was first found in the U.S. You can go panning for some Piedmont Region bounty at the Reed Gold Mine in anything but middling Midland. Those of you on two wheels may want to venture a bit west to Gastonia and its Harley-Davidson Museum, which houses a pristine 1914 HD Model 10-B. Nearby, head atop Crowders Mountain - in the state park of the same name - and see the burgeoning Charlotte skyline in the distance. Once back in the urban center, head to the 1950's-inspired Bar-B-Q King to reminisce about this incredible loop as you order some onion rings from one of their friendly carhops.
