From downtown Miami, this loop takes advantage of freeways going to and returning from Florida City; however, from there the well-maintained road goes from city to suburbs to farmland to wilderness. In Everglades National Park, the road goes through pine forests, then a prairie of sawgrass before entering the primordial mangrove swamp of the coast.

Warnings: Fill the gas tank in Florida City before entering the Everglades.

It’s a MAD World: For over 20 years a five-foot-tall, 100-pound Latvian immigrant chiseled the amazing Coral Castle in Homestead. Hoping that his “Sweet Sixteen” would come to America to live with him, the mysterious Ed Leedskalnin created the castle alone at night, working under the light of the moon. Nobody ever saw him transport the huge stones and many believe Ed rediscovered the secrets to the building of Egypt’s pyramids. His girl never came to this country, but the structure remains as a testament to true love.
